I had my entire bottle of Xanax nicked while here in Quito. Can I just go to a pharmacy here in Quito and get the medication over the counter or do I need to get a prescription?

First you will need the generic name which for Xanax is "alprazolam".

If no pharmacies have it, go to your embassy and ask which pharmacy the dplomatic people use. Those pharmacies will have medications from all over the world.

Most medications do not need a prescription but if this one does, just go to a doctor and get one. That should not be a problem.

I tried to buy some for my flight home but the pharmacist wouldn't sell it to me. He gave me the same exact advice as does #1: go to a local clinic, spend a few meager coppers and get yourself a prescription.

One thing I did one time for another prescription drug, when told no, was to get a panicky look on my face, say I had lost my (non-existing) prescription, and ask "oh no! what do I do?" Accompanied by rapid, shallow breathing and pleading eyes might do the trick, or might result in repetition of the aforementioned advice.
