we would like to spend few days in rainforest, does anybody know if it's better to choose a lodge near Tena or near Coca?

We just returned from a trip to a lodge in Tena. I have never been to Coca, so I can't say anything about it. However, the lodge that we stayed at in Tena was beautiful. The cabins were very nice with large showers and bathrooms. We were in Tena for white-water rafting and the lodge was recommended by our guide. We liked it so much we extended our stay for another day. The staff is friendly and the place was gorgeous. I cannot remember the name of it, but I will find out if you are interested.

Check out a map of Ecuador and you will see that Coca is much further in towards the untouched jungle. Most of the lodges are a further 2-5 hours into the jungle from the town via motorised canoe, meaning that you get to stay in primary rainforest. It is more remote and therefore your chances of seeing wildlife are better than from the places close to Tena which is in an area which has been settled for a long time. There are many other posts about Ecuadorian lodges on this branch.

Ive just returned from an Ecolodge in Kapawi, 10 days from anywhere, no roads out there, only accessible by private plane from Quito. I have travelled a lot and this is the best place I have been to. Whole place runs on solar - comfortable lodges on the lagoon, it is a little more expensive than the usual backpacker tours, but well worth every penny. In a few years the lodge will be handed back to the local Achuar tribe, so the community does benefit. Naturalist and Achuar guides were fantastic. Check out their website on www.kapawi.com

We enjoyed Bataburo lodge (via Coca) in August. Ask for the cabana with private bath. Very remote, scenic, great staff. Not many tourists, perhaps 14 during our stay of 4 days. The longer 8 day tour, including the Huarani village would be great if you enjoy the day or two of camping coming and going.
