My husband, 65 and I 62 will be traveling in Ecuador for six weeks using public transportation. We are budget travelers. We are interested in staying in the jungle but the one tour that sounded interesting to my husband is about $400 each to stay in a tent for three nights. We tent camp a lot in the pacific NW but personally would prefer another option. Any suggestions?

i can't help with suggestions, but we spent some time researching amazon/jungle tours in ecuador, peru, and bolivia. it appeared that they all average about 75 USD per person per day. a large portion of the money goes on fuel, as travel is mostly by boat and all fuel must be delivered to remote areas and then stored on the boat. (nice thought!)

there are many blog posts about people crossing from letitia, ecuador to iquitos, peru, using local transport boats. it is long and slow, but i kind of regret not trying it. (we felt we had too much stuff, as well as a few expensive things we didn't want to risk losing.)

from iquitos, you can fly to a few places, there are many posts here. sorry i can't be more helpful!

Is it Sani Lodge and the camping there your husband is thinking of?
I stayed there a couple of years ago and found it quite comfortable. The tents are standing on wooden platforms under thatched roofs. We were only four people staying at the camping while I was there, a German family and I. So, we had a tent each and we all chose to sleep in a tent on the big platform where there is most light and a view towards the lagoon. In the tent there was a mattress, a pillow, sheets, a towel, a soap and shampoo. On a table on the platform there was a container with drinking water, some toilet paper and a candle
But than, there is no electricity and the bathroom shared. It is good to have a head torch!
Here are a few photos of how it looks like at the camp site: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/p/m/22c1eb/

Friends of mine went to Nicky Amazon Lodge as a budget option. They took the bus down to Lago Agrio rather than flying and they paid about $300 each for 4 nights. I'm not sure if they booked direct or used an agent, but I can find out for you if you want me to. They were very happy with the trip.
