Hi everyone, i'm after a reliable update on how safe it is to travel in Ecuador at the moment? I plan to go there with my girlfriend in April and stay to teach. I know to stay away from the Columbian border. Any over advice would be really useful as I keep reading conflicting reports. Thanks in advance!

Don't climb up to the statue in Quito,as you will probably get mugged. We talked to two couples who were robbed there. But then the LP guidebook tells you not to do that anyway, so don't. Other than that we didn't hear about any problems and felt safe. There are lots of police in Quito old city, except for that one spot.

Consider the fact that thousands of people visit Ecuador each year without incident. For some reason people are more compelled to write about their negative experiences, complete with dire warnings and lots of exclamation points.
I do recommend that people not carry backpacks or large purses in Quito as those are easy targets for pickpockets and bag slashers. I lived there several years and only used a tiny purse when I was out and about and could tuck it under my jacket.
Guayaquil (as well as some other coastal areas) has a bad reputation. Otherwise Ecuador is not really unsafe.

Theft on buses is common, though unlikely to be 'dangerous' as in violent.
Don't put bags on the luggage rack - keep your bag on your lap, or lock it and put it on the floor in front of you with the strap wrapped around your leg.
Ecuador is no different than other countries in South America. In big cities, Quito and Guayaquil, certain areas should be avoided, also parts of Esmeraldas have bad reputation. In general the country safe to travel though.

Absolutely DO NOT put your bags on the floor of the bus. This is a very common mistake. It is a well-known tactic among thieves to slash a bag on the floor and steal the contents without your ever knowing. Larger bags are safer in the undercarriage compartment. Keep valuables on your person.

All very good advice! We will be very vigilent with the bags for sure. The plans are to live around the loja area, seems to have a better reputation than quito.

I was mugged in New Town in Quito just after dark. Then the next trip I stayed in between New Town and Old Town without any problems. Just be aware of your surroundings and take a taxi in Quito if you're not sure. Taxis are super cheap there! Overall I'd say Ecuador is a safe place to be, just use traveling common sense and you will be fine. Have a great trip!

Really? I've always put my small bag on the floor and have never had a problem. I am aware that thieves can crawl under the seats and watch out for that. I also keep the really important stuff in my pockets.

Have you ever known that happen to anyone, or is it just hearsay?
