Hello everyone,

I'm planning on spending about a month in the Galapagos Islands. The only obstacle is the cost of transport. I am only aware of flights to the Islands which seem to be up at US$1000 return. I'd much rather catch a boat to one of the Islands and catch another boat back a month later.

Does anyone know whether this is possible? Are flights the only direct transport?

Gracias.

Your prices on flights are way out, Aerogal flys there for 350 USD rtn from Quito in Low Season. I cant be 100% certain, but i think I read that you cannot catch a boat from the mainload. You certainly can from where you land though. You will also get better prices from there, especially if you have a few days to kill. My boat trip was 1600 usd I think, full price, I eventually got it for 1200 last minute (ie night before). go to

Previous reports:

There is an entrance fee of $100 payable in CASH ONLY. If you do not have it at the Baltra airport they take your passport to the Charles Darwin Research Station and you can get it the next day after you go to the bank. The only bank on Santa Cruz is perpetually crowded. There is no bank or ATM on Isabella.

Flying is the only option to get to the Galapagos. All foreigners are charged the same return fare, about US$400. You also have to pay a park entrance fee of US$ 100 in cash as soon as you get off the plane. This is the "standard charge" which everyone has to pay, whether they are going on a luxury cruise or doing everything themselves.

TAME flies to the islands also and they fly twice a day. If I remember correctly, Aerogal only goes three times a week. Prices range between $350-400 depending on season and are fixed by the government. Like others have said, there is a $100 park entrance fee. Have a great trip. Mike

you don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows

it used to be possible to jump on a cargo boat, but that was in the early nineties and not possible now as far as i know. they charge all tourists the same (ecuadorian residents pay less). the money goes to the preservation of the national park(official version).
