Hya,

My boyfriend and I are travelling South America, and were hoping to get a bit of beach time in either Ecuador or Peru. We are worried about the fog at this time of the year though. Does anyone know if it is already foggy and cooler in for example Montañita or Huanchaco? Has anyone been to a beach in either northern Peru or Ecuador around this time and has any suggestions?

Thank you!

Well, just my opinion, but if you are traveling in South America there are much better countries to go to the beach in than Ecuador or Peru (with the exception of Galapagos). Fog or no, these countries' beaches are not that spectacular compared with Colombia or Brazil, if you are going there, too. IMHO, stick to the Andes and Amazon in Peru and Ecuador, because they are amazing and the beaches aren't.

I was in Puerto Lopez in late June and had 2 days of sunny weather. A couple of weeks later in Trujillo we had the famous coastal low cloud and chillier temperatures, and a few days after that in Chiclayo it was hot and sunny again. Lima a few weeks after that was grim.

Bottom line is, cloudy weather is more likely at this time of year than December, but sunny weather is still more than possible. As always, if you don't like the weather, wait a couple of days - it usually changes!

To answer your questions though, I have been to Montanita in June and no fog when I was there, and northern Peruvian beaches in August (no fog). Still not worth it though.

Hi, I will recomend you the "ruta del sol", the weather is great with warm ocean water all year round, food is fresh and not expensive, hotels are from $7,00 and up. You travel by bus.
I liked Atacames, Canoa, Montanita, Salinas. in general I found all the small towns on the beach real nice and fun, but if you like a more sofisticated beaches, go to Salinas, Manta, Same. there are places for every taste and pocket.
I love the jungle and the Andes too, beautiful places, short distance between towns and good prices. Have fun!
