I'll be spending a week in the Galapagos and then I had planned 3 days in Quito and the surrounding places before i fly to Venezuela. Now i realised that the plane i wanted to catch is full and the next dep is 4 days later so now i have an extra 4 days in Ecuador. Can you suggest what i can do in these 4 days?? I'd have already been to the Amazon in Peru a couple of weeks before so maybe i'd leave out that option. thanks

Market in Otavalo should be top of the list. If you want a beautiful town with great scenery, some nice walks and probably the best cheese in northern South America look into Cayambe. BTW...plenty of museums and such in Quito. Just be careful. Crime is growing.

Lots of things to do / Old Town, Panecillo, Teleferio (but take warm clothes, it gets chilly up there(. Also would recommend Gullivers Travels opposite Papayanet for day trips / Cotopaxi and Lake uilotoa, Otavalo and if interested in getting away from it all they had a nice hostel in the country7cloudforest. Heard overnight trip to Mindo also worth a visit...

Baños, Cuenca, Guayaquil, Ruta del Sol, Montañita is great to relax at the end of a trip.

The colonial centre is quite safe - there is more crime in the Mariscal Sucre area so if you wated to stay there you'd be OK. The Quilitoa Loop can take three days but try to visit Saquisili on Thursday for the animal market and the town market as it's very interesting and Otavalians go there and sell the same stuff as you will find at the markets in Otavalo. However now you have more time do both. Perhaps if you have the money you could fly down to Cuenca or Loja and visit Vilcabamba.

I second the Quilatoa Loop. Chugchilan is a beautiful and worthwhile stop on the loop, a TINY mountain town with lovely views. What were you already planning with your original 3 days?
