I will be in Quito during All Souls Day on November 2-3. Does anyone know if the market at Otavalo will be open on Saturday November 3rd? From what I have read November 3rd is a major holiday in Ecuador and am wondering if the market will be open and running. Will most stores, restaurants etc. in Quito be closed that weekend? I arrive in Quito on November 1st and am concerned that everything will be closed that weekend making it difficult to make transportation plans etc. Any info about what to expect during this holiday would be greatly appreciated.

All buses will operate as normal. I don't know of any elaborate festivals anywhere. Many families stay at home, visit graves, drink colada morada and eat gua gua pan. Others head to the beach if it is a long weekend. Smaller towns may have more interesting celebrations. Ambato and area is big on the Dia de Difuntos traditions. I read it was worth a visit to the indigeounous community of Salasaca, on the road from Ambato to Baños for the rituals. Cuenca might be an option because the 3rd is their independance day, so always things to do for a few days there. If still in the Quito area the next week, Latacunga offers the Fiesta of the Mama Negra on the 11th. One of the major traditional festivals and mass pissups in Ecuador.

Isn't the Day of the Dead on Nov. 1st? Maybe that is the date in Mexico.
