Hi, we are currently in Baños and considering heading to Riobamba to ride the train. Having done some research, it is not clear whether you are able to ride on the roof at the present time. What seems clear is that if you are not able to, the journey is far less spectacular and not worth bothering. If anyone has ridden the train in the past few weeks and can give us a definitive answer, that would be great.

Cheers

Hey there! I was just in Riobamba a week ago and did the train ride. When we asked, they told us riding on the roof is no longer allowed, but then at the first stop we saw a bunch of people get on the last car and ride on top. Only on that car do they have actual seats and railings, so I think thats why you can ride there and not on the other cars. There are only about 25 seats up there though...so I´d get there earlyif I were you.The first part wasn´t that cool, I liked from Aluasí down la Nariz del Diablo most, altough the views were good the whole time. If I did it again, I would start in Aluasí and go down from there, but then you may have a hard time getting on the roof. Anyhow, it was a nice little ride. We got derailed for about 2 hours, so don´t make any big plans for that evening...it sounds like it happens a lot :) Have fun!

They've stopped people riding on the roof? Just get the bus.

hi,
my husband & i plan to visit ecuador in may 08.
would anyone tell us if we should go with an organized tour for the chiva/riobamba express down the devil's nose OR if we can get to riobamba and do it ourselves?
it seems that they ARE letting people ride the roof again after installing a few security measures... but my concern is that tickets will be sold out because vendors purchase tickets in bulk. if we have to pay for a tour, it would cost A LOT more but it may guarantee a seat. ??
advice?
thanks!
