It is a long way from the airport to the centre of Quito. It was in the region of thirty dollars if not quite that much to get a taxi, so I don't think you're getting severely ripped off if my memory is straight. It took us an hour and a half to get from the airport to town.

What I learned:

  1. The Galápagos is worth the money - it is absolutely spellbinding.
  2. Booking online, even with last minute deal will definitely cost you more than going to Quito or Ayora to look for last minute deals.
  3. The cheapest way is to fly to The Galápagos, have an idea already which boat you might like to go on and then try to find the offices of the guys that run them. This is potentially time consuming but if you have time then it is the cheapest option. What you could try is getting in touch with the boat owners through the link above and tell them that you're thinking about going on a cruise but you'd like to talk to someone in Ayora - owners do not want their boats to go without being a capacity and this gives you a far better position to bargain from.
  4. If you are stretched for time, most travel agents and hostels in Quito offer last minute deals that are considerably cheaper than anything posted online.

And try to book your flight early - it is ridiculously expensive for such a short flight. Oh - and I highly recommend an underwater camera or GoPro - the snorkeling is out of this world.

thanks for the above. i will contact the boat owners once i would be there and see kind of boat they will use. my flights are already booked with my miles. the soonest, the better. i have time and i do not wish to rush since i think i won't come back there. each trip takes me to a different country.

You don't need to worry about your regular camera getting wet - we never got wet once on the boat or in the ribs. I'd take a waterproof camera for getting shots of the marine life when you are snorkeling!
