Does anyone have any recommendations (or - as importantly! - horror stories) about car rental agencies in Quito?

Thanks

Why in the world would anyone rent a car in Ecuador?! We were there last year and found the busses to be inexpensive, plentiful, and on time.
Taxi rides in many of the smaller cites are a dollar. ($1.00) That's right, a dollar.

Cheers Rics but I DO need a car to be able to get around (hence my question!) Good to know re taxis in town but, outside towns, sadly buses won't necessarily work for me.

I take you are going to remote areas not covered by many buses and on a tight schedule... If yo do rent a car or if going off the beaten track a 4WD then make sure you take photos of its condition at the start of your trip so you can't be charged for any later dints and faults etc later on...

It might be cheaper though to hire someone with the necessary transport as you need it and you won't have to worry about leaving the car and your belongings in places where they could get damaged or stolen as the driver will be on hand to guard them while you are off enjoying yourself.....
