Hey,
I'll be going from Cuenca to Quito on July 21st (Saturday): I need to be in Quito by 10 pm, but will be carrying 2 bags and don't know if it's a good idea to arrive at the Terminal Terreste at night. I don't want to leave Friday unless it's an overnight ride: I'd rather spend time in Cuenca than Quito.
Are there any particular bus companies you'd recommend? It's gonna be a long-ass ride, so I'm willing to splurge for a cushy seat. Ideally, I'd like web contact info so I can look up the schedules. Also wondering how reliable that route is: I really do need to reach Quito absolutely no later than the wee hours of morning on the 22nd. How often do delays, breakdowns, etc. tend to happen?
Cheers for any information!

Terminal terrestre is not a nice place at the best of times, but if you can't avoid arriving after dark, you can always jump directly into a taxi, there are always many waiting.
I don't have any particular bus recommendations, but you can see a list of the companies and there are recommendations here
ugh... sorry, typing too fast, that should read "a list of bus companies and THEIR DESTINATIONS". Sorry.

The bus from Cuenca to Quito takes 10 long hours. Why not opt for a plane, and then you'll already be at the airport? This is what I did, and it was only a 45 minutes flight!! It costs more, but in terms of safety and time saved, it was well worth it to me.

Thanks for the information, Jnette and Lilylangtree. I'll do a bit more poking around--it looks like everybody and his mother has a bus company in Ecuador, so I'm not sure how to sort out the wheat from the chaff.
A plane trip would be faster, but I'm already doing 4 in-country flights in Peru and imagine that by the time I hit Cuenca, I'll be ready to scratch my eyeballs out if I even see the word "airport" in print. I may change my mind if I can't find a cushy bus though.
