Hi Folks,
Can anyone tell me where I will be able to find a good, english language, book exchange in either Guayaquil or Cuenca? Preferably 1 for 1 but I will settle for 2 for 1. I will be leaving at the end of next week for a Galapagos cruise and will be out of unread books. The thought of spending 8 days on a boat with no new books to read is quite chilling so you can imagine my desperation!
Thanks
Mike

In Cuenca, the library at the Abraham Lincoln Cultural Center, Calle Borrero 5-18 y Honorato Vasquez, has a rack of used paperback books for exchange. It's a "hit-or-miss" on the quantity and quality of paperbacks. All the good ones get grabbed pretty quickly leaving mostly romance novels and old paperbacks, e.g., The Exorcist.

In Cuenca near the center plaza, I walked by a bookstore that sold new and used English language books. It looked like it had a good inventory. Since they had used books, I'm sure they must exchange books.

You didn't ask about Quito, but if you can get there, the Confederate Bookstore in Mariscal has the best selection for exchange.

Sometimes in desperation, I oftentimes strike up conversations with fellow travelers asking them if they have any books they'd like to exchange. Sometimes, it works. Sometimes, I end up with bibles.

The bookstore in Cuenca near the central plaza mentiond by SojoMojo is ABC Bookstore (Padre Aguirre 8-11 y Sucre, (07) 2845749). They exchange 2 for 1. Good selection. Also sells different LP Books.

There's a place where I bought a bunch of pretty good used books, but I forget the name since it was a couple years ago. I know it was on the street with the very large, wide flight of stairs after crossing the river, close to Wunderbar (one of my favorite places!)

Wunderbar has a book exchange.

Also, there is a bookstore called Carolina Bookstore (Hermano Miguel 4-46 y Calle Larga, at the top of the escalinatas), near Wunderbar. You can buy or exchange.

We looked for the ABC Bookstore and couldn't find it. However, it was during carneval so perhaps it was closed.
