Defiantly not Montanita for beginners, This is not a safe beach as it has rocks and rip tides. Also there is only one break/wave that you can surf. So you would have to share the same space with much more experienced surfers. The funnest safest beach to surf on the South American coast is in the Canoa, Bahia de Caraquez, Bricenos area. No rocks, no reef, no rip tide. Bricenos is where I learned to surf and it was absolutely an amazing experience. You can find a local Alfonso at Bahia surf club in Bahia de Caraquez.
Which will take you to all the best beaches. Or in Canoa there are many good international surf instructors.
