I was robbed by 4 young guys with knives at Mirador Virgen at 5pm 20/01/16 when there were other tourists and locals near by walking the steps up to the view point. Fortunately I followed lonely planet advice that this area has historically been associated with assaults and to only take essentials with me so I only had 10 dollars and my phone and I was not hurt. According to the kind passer by who helped me (who lives in Baños) nothing like this has happened here for the last 2 years that she has lived here.
So just a warning to have heightened caution even in the apparently safest areas near the town and not to walk alone if possible. Also to carry as little as possible with you (which is always good advice!).
I have updated lonely planet and local police are informed and were very helpful and proactive.
I feel very lucky that nothing else happened. Ecuador has otherwise been an amazing place.
