Went into the Guajira Peninsula at the end of September with ExpTurs out of Santa Marta not knowing that a hurricane was brewing in the Caribbean. Hurricane Matthew hit while we were in Bahia Hondita, a Wayu community just south of Punta Gallina in the Alta Guajira. In addition to our group of seven (including our guide/driver) there were twenty-one others from France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Scotland, U.S., and Colombia (28 in total).

The 4X4 tracks we had come in on would be…

Hello all,

Similar question as Jag01 ... I was planning on booking a spontaneous trip into Cartagena and doing an independent vehicle rental on the north coast for a week with significant other and 9 year old daughter, then taking another week to drive the long stretch from the north coast to central Bogota region, then down to Quito ...

I have looked at FARC maps/territory from 2002 - 2013 and it looks like large swaths of land all over, except the highway corridor seems to be green ... The…

Hi All,

I was going to book a flight to Colombia (for Dec/Jan) right after the referendum - presuming it wolud be a Yes. Does anyone have a qualified opinion on whether this would be bad/i.e non safe travel option now?

I am aware that it´s pretty impossible to predict the future (and that Peace Deal or no mainly affecs Columbians) - still, I would be interested in opinions whether to change destinations or not.

Thx,

JAnet

Hello,
Has anyone made the journey from Playa de Belen to Mompox ?
I'll be traveling in March and was thinking either :
- bus through Ocana, Aguachica and El Banco
- boat (I saw in a post there's one going from Barranca but would you know where I could board it near Aguachica and how long it would take ?)

Do you think this trip is possible ?
Thank you.

Hi all,
I'm new to the Lonely Planet forums, but not to traveling! I'm planning on Cartagena in Novemeber. While there I'm also making a trip to San Andrés. Flying Delta to Cartagena on the 12th, will stay for a week. I have a boat arranged for a tour on the 13th, is there anyone else traveling in that time period? Any unique pointers or insights for either destination?

Thanks!

Peace Fails

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-37537252

Apparently the people of Colombia have voted to reject the peace agreement with FARC, by a margin of 50.2% vs. 49.8%. So the oldest war in the western hemisphere will continue.

Hello! I just joined here today in hopes of getting opinions on Colombia. We (two females) are spending 2-3 weeks (I have not booked the return flight to LA yet...)
We are so close to the Amazon, I almost want to go there, but then we will miss Colombia haha!
We fly into Bogota and I am unsure of if we should fly straight to Cartagena-Medellin- or spend a couple days first (or last)
This is my 30th country, but I think I spend soo much time in Asia, SE Asia, etc, I just do not know South America…

Hola,

I plan to travel to Colombia at the beginning of November, first to Buca, San Gil etc and then to Providencia and San Andres after. I noticed the guide mentioned highest rainfall in November. Can you let me know if that is right and what this means please? I.e. all day rain or an hour downpour in the afternoon etc?
I plan to dive on Providencia, any tips in terms of good dving place and sites, good hostel or accommodation? I am a lone, female traveler.
Thanks
Andrea
