I am planning a trip to Columbia for up to 6 weeks in June before travelling further South. I don't speak any Spanish at all, so I wanted to go to a school for up to a month, and probably do a homestay.

Which would be the best place to stop and stay for a while? I wanted to be near the beach but i am getting the impression that Cartagena will be too touristy. What are the options other than here and Bogota? And can anyone recommend a good spanish school/ classes..

Muchos thanks!

There are plenty of universities in Bogota offering spanish lessons for foreigners I'd recommend getting a tutor though as you get more out of talking one on one with a native speaker that will correct your pronunciation. Check at the Platypus Hostel in La Candalaria they should know some competent tutors, there is also a university near by the the Platypus that offers courses I believe it is the Universidad Nacional.

Have a look here: http://www.123teachme.com/search.php?relCountryID=18. I found this site very useful when I was researching Spanish language schools in South America. They also have a few schools listed in other cities than Bogotá and Cartagena.

Have fun travelling! :)

There are some one-on-one classes given at bargain prices at the Blacksheep Medellin Hostel. Stay there, take classes on the veranda. Have a beer when you are finished.
What could be better? Classes are roughly US$6.00 an hour.

javeriana university
IHES BOGOTA language school

Have you made a choice on your Spanish course yet, Vic_P?

I am planning on starting something near the beginning of June, and was leaning towards Bogota, but have not committed yet because I heard that the courses in Colombia were not as dependable or as cheap as elsewhere. What have you found? Any advice??
