Hello, my husband and I are leaving for two weeks in Colombia at the end of this month. I have been researching accommodations in Tayrona and am confused about something- please forgive my ignorance- we have never stayed in hammocks; what is this like? I am picturing an open-air space with a bunch of people in hammocks? Any privacy? Do we need to bring blankets or are they provided, are they unnecessary? Where do you stash your stuff safely? Again, sorry I'm so clueless, just want to know what it's like before we make a decision about where to stay. Thanks for all assistance!

There are several places to stay in Tyronna. You catch the bus at the market (Carrerra 11 and Calle 10) in Santa Marta. There are cabanas in the park and outside of the park if you want rooms. There are three main beach sites within the park that are most popular. Only the first and last have campsites. The first you cannot swim because of strong currents. The last is usually a bit crowded. You arrive at the park entrance and it´s 23,000 pesos to enter. It´s a light hike of about 30 minutes to the first campsite, then another 45 to the last. You can also hire horses to take you all the way there. If you bring a tent or your own hammock then accomodation is cheaper OR you can rent a hammock or tent there. There are several places right outside of Tyronna that have cabanas as well, you just have to ask around. Food is quite pricey so if you want to do things cheap, you can bring your own with you. The last campsite has camping and hammocks near the beach but it´s not that attractive (no privacy, etc) but they also have a little hut up on a rocky island (its not an island but almost resembles it) There you can rent hammocks as well OR rent a small room. The room I believe is about 60,000-90,000 per night so quite pricey and there are only two or three rooms so I would reccomend reserving ahead. If you want privacy, I would reccomend renting out a cabana outside of the three main camp areas. If you want a room at the last campsite, send me a mssg and I can send you a phone number to reserve. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Tayrona is an amazing and beautiful place. There are a lot of good hikes in the area and secluded beaches you can find.

I believe the area being described above is called Arrecife.

Hammocks offer little privacy, but are a great cheap alternative to renting a room, and it's a kind of fun experience if you have yet to try it. Usually they are provided, I'm not sure if they are at Tayrona or not, but I would assume so, and they often are used in combination with a mosquito net, sometimes at extra cost, however even with the net it is usually cheaper than a room with a bed. There is little privacy, and they can get cold. I would suggest you bring a sleeping bag or a blanket - these may also be available to you most likely at additional cost. Some places may offer you a place to stash your stuff, but in my experience it was not necessary, although I have not been to Tayrona, so there may be more issues with it there. Hammocks are kind of an interesting experience, although about a week is the longest I think I could handle sleeping in them as they aren't really the best nights sleep you'll ever get.
