Hi my son 26 and I are planning to come to cocuy in feb and are happy to just be in the town of el cocuy and go on the milk truck and stay a few days at kawarra and a few days at Esperanza
Will we see some nice distant views of the peaks and whatever trekking we do will be a bonus.
Would that be worthwhile given the trip is fairly long to get there.

Also we are planning to spend 2 weeks prior in higher altitude towns
around manizales and mongui b4 we get to cocuy
So we are more used to altitude as we are healthy but not fitness freaks
That would be helpful I am hoping
Cheers Penny

Would the quickest way of travelling from El Cocuy to Cartagena
be to take bus back to Bogata and fly to Cartagena
Then head to Mompos
Thanks Penny

We did the circuit in July 2013. Report => Que chévere es el cocuy

When you enter the park office in El Cocuy or Guican, they will say it is no longer possible to hike the circuit. Rangers of the park will say your safety cannot be assured. They will say it is closed because foreigners left too much litter.... BS!

The real ground of the so called unofficial closure is a dispute with the U'wa tribe, which until now is still not settled. The national park has overlap with U'wa tribe reservate and some part of the circuit is holy ground to those people. They found it disrespectful that foreigners pass their holy grounds.

We hiked thousands of miles in South America and never found a "trail" so clean as at the back of those big walls. And there is NOBODY there. It's real wild and remote. The only people you will meet out of the season are farmers living in lower valleys and just pass through.

You will have to persuade the rangers and prove you have the gear and skills for the job. They will ask you to sign a paper to take all responsibilty. In the end they will let you go! Just don't give up.

Officialy you can only do it with an official guide, recognized from the National Parks service, but there are some good guides in town who can guide you around also and they are equally good. We did it unguided.

Until now the U'wa dispute has nut turned into an official law! So there cannot be a closure of the park. That would be a real surprise for me!! It can be that they want to keep you away from the core of the park, but a full closure. Not at this moment. When we were there it was the same story. Everybody told us it was closed. Oh boy!

But please if you go, follow all rules of Leave no trace if you really care about the future of this spectacular place on earth!

Hey guys cheers for the updates.

I am planning to do the 6 day trek from Guican in the next couple of weeks regardless of the closure and am looking for a companion or two to share the adventure with me. I must admit that whilst I am not afraid of breaking park rules to see this amazing place, the land claims issue with the indigenous peoples presents the biggest dilemma for me and thus will conducting the trek with greatest respect for the land and it's original owners (as I would anywhere regardless).

I have friends that completed the circuit 6 weeks ago in the same conditions and of the 2 people they met in 7 days, both were indigenous to the area, and both permitted my friends to continue (even in light of of the fact one of them worked for the park also). However, if I come across anyone that disapproves, however disappointingly, I will of course turn back.

This has been a dream of mine for a long time now and all I know is that I must at least try!

Muchisima gracias

Hola,

I'm heading that way in the next few days as well - I've booked a trip into the southern part of the park with rodrigo arias, climbing one of the southern peaks, but would be good to meet up with anyone who will be in the area beforehand as I'm travelling alone. Reply on here or email me at amjwest (at) gmail (dot) com if anyone is in the area?

May also be keen on doing warm up type one day treks.

Cheers

Andy
