We are looking at an Avianca flight from Santiago to Fort Lauderdale that would require an overnight in Bogota (from noon until about 9 a.m. the next morning). The fare is so cheap I doubt they include a hotel. Anyone have experience with this? I was thinking of a hotel near the airport, but something in the city center or old city be best (taking into account time needed for immigration, customs and transportation)? Apparently no hotel at the airport itself. Found several interesting-sounding hotels on Tripadvisor.

There are places on the Avenida Dorado running from the airport to the center of the city. But, everything is pretty close - 20-25 minutes in a taxi...I would suggest heading into town and depending on your budget check what's about. Mid range and familiar is La Casona del Patio Amarillo and up there are a couple of good options in the Candelaria...check out this article

There are no hotels near airport Eldorado. But center city is close enough and taxi is so cheap you'll be foolish to not go.

Thanks. Hotel Opera sounds nice. Have to convince my wife (Brazilian, who lived in rio for 10 years and still finds it frightening; we live in Northeast Brazil now) that overnighting in Bogota is not risky. Otherwise, may need to fly straight on to Miami the same day (6 hour layover at the Bogota airport--- I hear there is not much there).

There are actually three hotels in the airport area, one of the the Habitel www.hotelhabitel.com is less than 2 minutes from the international terminal, the other two are about 10 minutes away one is the Sheraton http://www.ghl.com.co/hotel.php3?id=1 and the other is the Capital http://www.ghl.com.co/hotel.php3?id=3, both run by the GHL hotel chain.
