Hi, I'm planning to visit Colombia this year doing a 19-day Intrepid group tour as a) I'll be travelling alone (female, 41) and b) I have limited time. As this will likely be the only time I visit Colombia I want to make the most of it and perhaps add on a week at the end of the tour to do my own thing and make it a bit more exciting :) . I'm thinking either:

  • Ciudad Perdida 5-day trek + a few days on the beach afterwards; or
  • Fly to Leticia (or elsewhere - open to suggestions) for an Amazon jungle trip of 4 days or so.

Is August dry enough for these trips, or better to go in Feb?

I've previously travelled fairly extensively in South & Central America - about a year in total - and have done rainforest & wetlands trips from Rurrenabaque in Bolivia, which I loved.

Any advice or suggestions gratefully received!

August is dry enough for Leticia and the Amazon. I would recommend that, partly because of the weather. You're more likely to get rain on the Caribbean coast that time of year.

You really can't compare the 2 jungle options. On the Lost City trek, you see the selva alta, the high jungle that you trek through, with lots of beautiful mountain views. Leticia is on the Amazon river, and the surrounding area is flat. You can see both pink and gray dolphins in the river there, and if you travel to a jungle lodge well outside of the town, you have opportunity to see more wildlife.
