Hi all,

I'm planning to be in Colombia for the first time for a couple of weeks in November, flying in to Bogota and out of Cartagena. I'm 26 and traveling solo. How does this itinerary look?

Day 1 - arrive in Bogota (night)
Days 2-3 - Bogota
Day 4 - Fly to Medellin
Days 5-7 Medellin
Day 8 - Bus to Salento
Days 9-10 - Salento
Day 11 - Fly to Cartagena
Days 12-13 Cartagena
Day 14 - Fly out of Cartagena (flight leaves at night)

Why do you choose Salento after Medellin according you are in Bogota first ?
Why do you want to backtrack ?

If I do it that way I end up in Medellin on the weekend, which I thought might be more fun since the city is known for its nightlife. Since I'm flying anyway (other than the bus from Medellin to Salento) it didn't seem like it'd be too out of the way to do it in that order.

Agreed, it makes more sense to go to Salento first from Bogota. The flights you could take from Armenia or Periera (near Salento) to Cartagena would take longer, because you would need to connect in Bogota, with a wait at the airport there. Medellin has direct flights to Cartagena.

Bus between Medellin and Salento will take around 7-8 hours, including a quick bus change along the way. You don't actually need a flight to get to Salento from Bogota. An overnight bus Bogota to Armenia takes only 6 hours, then another hour to Salento.

Thanks for the advice. VivaColombia seems to have direct flights from Pereira to Cartagena but you're probably right that it's still easier to go to Salento first rather than Medellin. I guess I just need to decide how important it is to me to have the weekend in Medellin.

We are in Colombia now and we were in Medellin during the week and had some crazy nights. Salento gets busy during the weekend, lots of travellers gather on the main square so if you decide to to Salento the Medellin then you will still have lots of fun :)
