Can anyone recommend a good hostel in Cartegena? I will be there for 4 nights and am looking for something in a fun (but not too sketchy) area. I am looking for hostels not already mentioned in the LP guidebook, perhaps from someone who has recently visited, or is still there. I'm looking for a private or double room. Any recommendations? I myself have been in Colombia for ten months, so if anyone has any questions, I might be able to offer some advice in return. Gracias, SG

theres only one hostel in Cartagena and its in the guidebook so i doubt youll find anywhere else im afraid... those who dont go to Casa Viena go to one of the cheap hotels one or two blocks away. if you do find somewhere let us know

there´s Holyday Hotel aswell, it´s actually a hostel and with dorm rooms and a few cheap singles and doubles. Great atmosphere in the common area. I was there about 2 weeks ago.

Just to clarify, a cheap, clean "hotel" will be just fine. I'll take any advice you can give!! Buenos viajes! -SG

Hotel Holiday is right round the corner from Casa Viena in Getsemeni. As kiwipaisa says, there's really only one hostel in Cartagena but if you are after a private room then either Hotel Familiar or Hotel Real will serve as a clean and central location. There's not much life in either of them however but they are well located.

There are a lot of small hostals near casa viena, when the hostalk is full they'll help you search one. Their location can be foudn through their website. Go drink some rum in the havana cafe, or eat the cheap lunch on the corner of the street

Villa Colonial on Maravillas, just round the corner from Holiday is brilliant. It's a beautifully restored colonial building. The rooms are spotless and all have private bathrooms with lots of hot water. My room was on the third floor and I could walk straight out onto a roof terrace with great views of the old city. The owners are super friendly and helpful. A year ago a room cost 25K a night.

its not true that there is only one hostel in Cartagena. There are many. I stayed in a hostel called "Northstar Backpackers" (www.northstarbackpackers.com) located in Bocagrande. Considering Bocagrande is one of the more expensive areas, i was surprised it only cost 20k to get a bed in an AC room. i think the dormitory with a fan was something like 16k but in cartagena, its hard to sleep without AC. Its a nice alternative for those who think Getsemeni is a "sketchy" area at night. clean and close to everything you need. good value, especially since Casa Vienna is almost always booked two weeks in advance.
