Does anyone know how much the Colombian government charges per day for overstaying your visa? The extension process is extensive and expensive and as I´m only overstaying by about 12 days I´m wondering if its worth it. I will be leaving by boat to Brasil via Leticia and have heard that the border checkpoints are not too strict, any truth to this? Any advice is well appreciated, thanks.

Why risk it? The visa extension is easy and cheap. Not very strict in Leticia -I would say who told you that is an idiot! Having been ther twice, I found DAS to be quite formal there, and why do you think they would like to let ramdom foreigners exit the country illegally out of the goodness of their hearts? What if the agent takes a little offence that if THEY were in your country trying to do the same, they would be arrested ad put in a holding cell, but you expect there to be no problem. Good luck.

On another note - as you will be catching a boat which may have more flexible departure time; the fines that need to b paid are dependant on the time overstayed. You need to get DAS to give you the letter (I went through this process in Bogota with DAS while getting a visa extension) and have the fine paid before you get to the exit point. DAS for this in leticia are at the airport. If you search poorbuthappy.com for visa extensions, I think someone posted the fine costs.
