Hi there,
We are two female friends in our 30's travelling to Colombia for 2 weeks in November.
We fly in and out of Bogota. We plan to spend 2 nights and 1 full day in Bogota on arrival.
We were then thinking of going towards parque national el cocuy stopping off in a few places on the way like Villa de Leyva, Barichara and San Gill. Is it too much to travel up through this area by bus? We don't mind some travel by bus but only being there for 2 weeks we don't want to spend too much time in a bus either.
At el cocuy we would like to spend about 3 days hiking. We won't have camping gear with us so were thinking day hikes?
After this we would like to go up to the Carribean coast for the second week. Where can you fly from/to to get there? Do you have to go via Bogota?
We would like to see Tayrona and Cartagena and also hang out at some nice surf beaches for a bit.
Then fly back to Bogota.

Any tips on the above would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Susan

EasyFly has cheap direct flights from Bucaramanga (near San Gil) to Cartagena. That might be best, because I think most flights from Bucaramanga connect through Bogota.

Your itinerary looks doable in 2 weeks time, so long as you travel fast. I'm not sure about 3 days El Cocuy, though. Reports are that part of the park is currently closed.

Thanks for getting back. With El Cocuy I've read you can do day hikes outside the park?
Keen to avoid long bus journeys so looking at flights to avoid any of those..
Any other tips greatly appreciated :-)

Hola.
We are now in Colombia, many times around (my partner is from Colombia...).
For 2 weeks, heading to Cocuy is maybe too short... it´s far away and travelling in Colombia is long and tiring... And true Cocuy seems to be closed in some areas (sorry, we haven´t been there... but for sure you need TIME... and you are a bit short...).
Villa de Leyva is really nice. And so is Barichara. San Gil is great and cheap for rafting and paragliding (we did it).
But all this in ONE week, not possible we think for sure... Cocuy sounds imposible...
Caribe... not too much surfing there-...Cartagena is great, colonial town and beaches and islands... Tayrona has still a taste of paradise even if more and more people there (november should de OK). Santa MArta is near.
Flights ... cause in 2 weeks you need to fly...
there are low-cost flights with VIVACOLOMBIA just check and plan your route...
You miss coffee area Eje cafetero between Armenia and Pereira (Salento is the most tourist place) ...
Bogota in one day ok, interesting and free or super cheap museums (Museo del oro is top).
More details on our blog in spanish... prices, route, budget, accommodation...
Enjoy! Suerte!

Hi there,
Thanks for your reply. Kinda disappointed about El Cocuy but you're right
it's probably too much to do in 2 weeks, especially if it is really far out of
the way.
In terms of booking internal flights, do prices go up a lot if you book at
short notice? We haven't any booked so far and are going in 3 weeks.
We would like the flexibility of waiting until we get there but don't
want to have to pay a lot.
I am learning Spanish so I will try to read your blog!
Muchas gracias,
Susan

Hola.
Usually prices don´t change too much with VivaColombia but sometimes they publish super cheap promotions and maybe in that case you have to buy certain days.
We just bought our Colombia-Panamá ticket one week before, the price was always the same.
Just have a look... trying to buy a flight for after tomorrow or days around...
Suerte!
