How much time would you have to spend in Chile and what time of year would you be coming?

If you have at least 1 month-time I would suggest you to visit the following places:
- few days in the North around San Pedro (I d skip this if you dont have enough time)
- at least 3 days in Valparaiso and 2-3 days in Santiago
-1 week on Easter Island
- 2 weeks in Patagonia (Punta Arenas, Isla Magdalena, Torres del Paine (W trek) and maybe a short side trip to Perito Moreno. From P.Natales it s a 5-6 hours bus ride).
These would be my TOP places in Chile. But of course there are many others wonderful places you could visit, but it all depends on your time availability. Do not forget Chile is a very long country :-)
In which season are you planning to be there? (Patagonia in winter is not a good choice for example). The best period for you to be there would be between November-March (Jan-Feb is peak season. Chilean main attractions are packed with tourists. If you can choose I would avoid these 2 months).

I ve been last year and still get contact with my tour guide. He is an entrepreneur that did a great job showing me Santiago and Valparaiso. I stayed one week and love wine so I did history and wine tours.
I travelled to SouthAmerica and discovered private guides that made the trip more special. Like a local!
In Chile: Thomas Poussard.

Lots of great idea. Thanks for asking and all the replies. I am going to be there for the first 3 weeks of October, so not warm but maybe I will go south at the end of the trip? I have scheduled to see Santiago, La Serena, Valpariso, Chillan and Chiloe.....the name of your guide would be of great assistance. I wonder how my Spanish will be, but at least I am trying. When I travel anywhere that is not an english speaking country I always try to get the pronunciation down and then keep my phrase book with me always. It helps a great deal. Then if I can show the natives my book they can help translate as well. This will be my first 'assignment' as a travel writer for my own Digital Magazine. Keep it in mind.
