Hola,
Heading from santiago down to puerto montt.
we're finding chile expensive so don't want to stop too much.
I've heard valdivia and tecomo (sp?) Are nice - has anyonr been there or would recommend stopping anywhere else south of santiago?
We'll be stopping at osorno to volunteer for a cpl of weeks, but any tips for nice places (for hiking/relaxing/away from crowds if possible at this time of year) in between would eb great!

Actually it is better to avoid the big towns on the Panamericana. Go directly to the Lake District, and check out smaller villages. Personally i've never visited Chile in February !

I was in Pucón a month ago - it's gorgeous. Excellent place to do some adventure sports if you like that sort of thing. It made me really wish I could have stayed a little longer (although as you say, Chile's pretty pricey). I hear good things about Puerto Varas as well.

Hola,
Can you tell me more about your volunteering at Osorno? It sounds really interesting. What exactly will you be doing?
Puerto Varas is very pretty but very touristy. You must go up (by car to the ski centre) of Volcan Osorno and trek Volcan Calbuco if possible. You need to get to the B&B Casa KO to start the hike to Volcan Calbuco. The lake: Lago de todos los santos is so nice and pretty and lago Llanquihue is great too. You really need a car to do all this. Also you should go to Los Saltos de Petrohue, all these things/places are near Puerto Varas (within an hour driving)
