We're flying into Santiago in mid-September; and have a few days after skiing in Portillo 1.5 week to do something else. Any tips to what else to do? I'm really interested in going to Rapa Nui or the Falkland Islands.. but maybe a bit expensive for my travelling partner.. So maybe hiking, thermal baths, volcanoes are good ideas? Would appreciate any tips/idea of where to go!

Easter Island is approximately 4800 K (3000 miles) from Santiago. It's about a 5 hour flight and it's not cheap. If your friend is on a budget and you want to see something else...why not consider Valpariso, Vina del Mar, or going to Mendoza, Argentina. All are easily accessible by luxury bus. Argentina is very inexpensive right now.

I'd recommend you to fly south to Pucon area (www.pucon.cl) where you have again skiing SKI VILLARRICA and many of the country's best hot springs. Although its rain / snow season down there , you still will enjoy it .

If you need road maps of Chile , see here : http://www.turistel.cl/v2/secciones/mapas/index.htm

PS : Don't risk yto go to Falkland , its too cold and stormy down there.

Good luck

Thanks guys for so much good information! :)

We've decided on not flying to Eastern Island as the air fare is more than US$ 1200.. and one should probably have more than just a couple of days on the beautiful place we've read so much about in Thor Heyerdahl's litterature! My fellow countryman!

But, the other places you mention sounds great and will most likely head north of Santiago to Valpariso, Vina del Mar etc. Is it possible to all this in say; just 3 days? Unfortunately we only have 12 days all together..

And another thing; we managed to book our flight and will arrive on your national day; will it be difficult/impossible to get transportation from the airport to Portillo? The hotel can arrange for a shuttle transport, but is extremely expensive. How mucg for example would a taxi cost up to Portillo? Thanks a lot in advance! :)
