Does anyone know if this recent eruption will affect travel to southern Chile in late July/August?

It depends on whether it decides to erupt again or not. Not a good time of year weather-wise.

By bus, doubtful, but the Mercurio newspaper in Santiago normally has more details.

Hi to everybody from the Araucania:
Calbuco volcano (Puerto Mont and Puerto Varas area) seems to stand ready for others pulses, involving medium eruptions and ashes throwing. It keeps in red status with 20 kms. exclusion area and we are expecting that the situation passes to a more calm condition.
Villarica volcano (Pucon and Villarica area) still stands in orange status and it seems that the ski station won't be open for winter services . During this month, it's expected a final decision about the definitve closing of the station.
Llaima and Lonquimay volcano (Curacautin and Malalcahuello area witn Corralco ski station) both seem to be quiet this winter, so on we expect for a regular winter services on the tourism area.
Anyways we suggest to all people planning the visit into volcanoe's area this southern winter to consult about the alert forecast on the following sites (in spanish):

Chilean Andes ridge is a live mountain spine, which is always ready to express living nature forces by the action of volcanoes activity. Mapuche culture refers to living spirits (Pillan), living under the soil, expressing its angry to the unbalanced human actions by the erupting and trembling. We are just living in an amazing territory cracked down and changed upon thousands of years, this is our tourism atractive too and those visiting the Araucania must deal with such a wonderful experience. So the "Pillans" have the last word to decide when and how they want to express for being respected.
Welcome to everybody in Curacautin for winter-volcanic experiences. We wait for you in www.epupewen.cl
