Hey everyone,
Am heading over to Chile soon to spend a few months living and maybe picking up some work along the way if I can. Was planning on staying in Valparaiso for most of the time and was hoping for some advice on finding flatmates, friends, any work etc. Any websites, hangouts, Spanish schools, notice boards etc that would help me settling in, would be greatly appreciated.
Also open to any advice on other good cities to live in.....
Thanks

Matt's Blog is a blog about Valparaiso, written by an English bloke. Quite a lot of info there.
Hope it helps

Hi,
If you are willing to teach Enlgish, you can easily find work.
The last time I taught English in CHile was back in 2002.
I taught English in Arica. The pay is around $3,000 - $4,000 pesos/hr.
SAntiago is more; but Santiago can also be an expensive city to live in.
Personally, I don't like Santiago. I speak as a Chilean. The city is
too polluted. The Winter months can be pretty bad.
If you happen to land a teaching position,
you can get assistance from the language school or institute in finding
a place to live. A room in someone's house shouldn't cost you more than
$100 /month. Santiago is different, however; there, you might have to
rent an apartment. What I do is I stay at a "residencial" or a hostal for
a week or two and just ask around.
By the way, I like northern Chile because of the climate. Arica, Iquique,
Antofagasta are pleasant during the winter months of June -- September.
I like Valparaiso; there is a bohemian flair about the place.

Hello Kath8, I am a 51 year old brit living alone in the south of Chile. My wife went back home and landed a good job in government. The idea is to finish the house (4-storey house), put it for sale and go back home. In the meantime I could use some help. You could stay for free as long as you help me around the house. You would only have to buy and prepare your own food.
I could also teach you French, Spanish or Portuguese, as a compensation for your help.
This goes for anyone reading this post!
Cheers, Kavek
