Hi,

I am cyclist and I'd like to get some bike parts sent over from Europe to Chile. What's the deal in Chile? How much import duty would I have to pay? In Bolivia it is 40%. In Peru, if I remember rightly, it is also something like that but there's no tax if your order is under a $100. I've been told that the tax is lower in Chile. Anyone know?

Thanks,
Albert

I'm not an expert, but Chile has a Free trade agreement with the European Union since 2003. Under this agreement Chile eliminated tariffs for bicycles and parts. Hence if the parts are originating from the EU (and meet the rules of origin) you may be able to claim the preferential tariff of zero. However there could be other applicable taxes on top of this such a IVA etc...I don't know.

I'd say it is better that you look at the Customs website of Chile (Aduanas Chile) and if you have any doubts afterward, contact someone there to clarify. Do you speak Spanish? They have a Q&As on their webpage (https://www.aduana.cl/importaciones-de-productos/aduana/2007-02-28/161116.html#vtxt_cuerpo_T3), see question #5, where it mentions that one must pay the Ad Valorem tariff of 6% (which may be exempted if your product meet the eligibility requirements under the EU-Chile Free Trade Agreement) + the IVA of 19% (which is not exempt). That's the information from their website, but again I can't confirm the accuracy. Hope this helps, good luck!

..And that is if you are importing new items..if the parts you are importing are 'used' there may be additional tariffs applicable.

Cheers. My Spanish is not brilliant-just about get by. Will check out the site. Looks like I will have to pay the IVA tax then. I was hoping that the Free Trade Agreement would mean I wouldn't have to pay so much. 19% is still quite high. Better than Bolivia, though, where it is 40%.
Thanks for the help!
