I am leaving for Easter Island tomorrow. I was texting one of my friends who lives in Santiago who has been to E.I. in the past and he said that he heard that some of the archaeological sites had been blocked off by indigenous locals and to visit them tourists must employ the use of local guides. Is this true? Would that also mean that buying a ticket for the national park at the airport could be a waste of money? Hopefully someone has information regarding this.

I have heard from several people that I should buy the national park tickets at the airport, is that because it is the only place on the island to buy them? If not, where else can they be purchased?

Thanks!

In today's paper it said they have come to an agreement, so you should be OK. The local people are not happy with "mainlanders" acting as guides and running the park. Aside from one day, using a local guide got you through the barricades.

The ticket is cheaper at the airport by the equivalent of about US$10, that is why they recommend getting it there. Otherwise, you get it at the CONAF office.

Thanks for the info! Do you know if kava (the Polynesian drink made from the root of the pepper plant)is consumed in Rapa Nui? Is it legal to bring it into the country? I would like to bring some Tongan kava to give as a gift from the other end of Polynesia. I have researched this and have not found any info regarding kava and Chile. It is legal just about everywhere else in the world.

irrespective, it's actually quite good to have a guide for one day, and then visit on your own another day.

No idea about kava but if it is a fresh root it won't be allowed into Chile.

Yes, definitely a guide one day if you can.

How did it go?

Friend and I will be in Chile Min June for Copa America and then will spend 4 days in Easter Island starting June 22.
