I am really excited to be taking a trip to Easter Island in 10 days. I want to do all of the "normal" tourist stuff there such as visiting the Moai etc, but I would like to also check out some things there that may be lesser known. If anyone has any ideas, I am open to suggestions of any kind. I have also heard that there is a school there that teaches exclusively in the Rapa Nui language. Does anyone know the name or location of this school? I would like to check it out because I am a teacher and I have an interest in languages.

Also, how much should I expect to pay to rent a motorbike or scooter for a few days while I am there?

You don't need a guide but you would need to do a lot of reading to know what you are looking at. You can always find a local guide through your lodging.

The entrance to the main sites is US$60 equivalent for non-Chileans. It used to be ten dollars cheaper if bought at the desk in the airport. Maybe it still is, check.

A school is unlikely to welcome tourists in to visit while it is in session, though you can always ask. If you are there on a Sunday, go to mass. They sing the hymns in Rapa Nui.

Thanks for the advice/info. I have a background in anthropology and I have already read quite a lot on Easter Island over the years, but I do not consider myself an expert so I may look into getting a guide for a day. I am hoping to visit the school not so much as a tourist but just to observe and compare their instruction to the Maori, Tongan and Samoan language immersion schools here in NZ. I cannot find the name or location of this school online though, and I have only heard of its existence.

Hi culturesofoblivion.
I was on Easter island last December.
We rented a scooter for 2 days and it was really a great choice, you can get to Anakena beach in 20mins and to all the others archaeological sites on the island. There is no traffic at all, just some wild horses :-).
The price for the scooter was 15000 pesos per day (that s about 22-23euros). If you share it with someone it really worth it and you are completely independent! Organized tours are OVERpriced on the island.
Motorbikes are probably a bit more expensive.
We also rented a bicycle for a day and the price was (if I remember well) 7000 pesos/bicycle for 8 hours .
Enjoy Easter island! It s an AMAZING PLACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How is it going on Easter island? :-) Did you manage to swim in Anakena or was the water already too cold?
