Saw on the news wires yesterday that there was a big aftershock from the earthquake last week near Antofagasta. Is anyone in the area, and what is the story? Was planning on heading to San Pedro to cross into Bolivia in a few days. If anyone is in the region and know what is going on, would appreciate an update - are roads still open (are people ok, most importantly!), and any more aftershocks predicted, or can you predict these things, literally goes with the territory...

the aftershocks are common after an earthquake, but decreasing with the time, the area where are you moving (SPA) is far of the center of earthquake (Tocopilla-Quillagua, northwest of SPA) . in SPA all is functioning well, including the road network
about earthquake predictions, humankind is still very far of that aim

I was in Antofagasta the day the 7.7 happened and the following few days. Balcony windows and all large area glass windows shook hard and long...some broke, A few minutes later our overhead dining lamp was swaing and continue on and off during the course of the dinner, but we never stopped enjoying lunch. There was nothing mayor that happened in Anto. except for power being off and the cement canopy at the Raddison collapsing . I briefly inspected the cement canopy from 20 feet away and suspect the study will blame the bolt mounting design. By the way, Anto itself had never had anything serious happen during a quake..never.
By far from the epi-center Post 1 probably means 80 miles to San Pedro7Bolivia border. In my opinion only, no one can predict aftershocks with scientific proof, so any answers for you will be from guesses or perhaps from previous experience in any quake area.
