A friend and myself are in the midst of planning for our adventure through South America next year (Feb-June) and we've come to the realisation that we probably only have time to really see either Chile or Colombia. Can anyone here help us make the decision?
Cheers

Having worked in both countries, I can say that they both are sweet spots. It depends what you're expecting to do. Basically, I would vote for Chile if you want more of a temperate zone "outdoor" backpacking experience (backpacking as in climbing, hiking, camping, kayaking etc). That time of year is their Fall/early Winter season, so keep that in mind. I would vote for Colombia if you want warmer temps (although Bogota is relatively cooler than much of the country), higher biodiversity that comes with closer proximity to the equator, good food, diving in warm water, and salsa dancing. Depending where you are in Colombia, it could be raining quite a bit that time of year...Either way you go is bound to be what you make of it. Both countries are rich in culture, with friendly people.
fair winds..

"We advise you to reconsider your need to travel to Colombia at this time because of the very high threat of terrorism and criminal activity. Terrorist, insurgent and paramilitary groups are active throughout Colombia and there is a high risk of kidnapping, including of foreigners."

Consider both even though Chile might be a bit safer and even though Colombian cities are considered quite safe - think!!!. As for cultural experiences - though both offer differences that can be found in SA and although the Colombian the experience is more physical than the Chilean which seems to be more spiritual - NO - that in itself seems a LIE!!! You have to decide which is more important. Andean experiences or tropiclal ones. The Andean Indigenous is more spiritual than physical in my opinion but who knows???? Things may change........
"Andean Indigenous" That's not exactly Chile - head on to Bolivia or Peru, if you want a taste of that.
Having said that, I really liked Chile (I have not been to Columbia).

only visited Colombia this year, but planning to visit chili. The only thing I can say is that we experienced that venezuela was more unsafe than colombia and that colombia was great and very worth it's money. we spended about 30-35$ a day (2 persons) and did do anything we wanted to, friendly people and never were in trouble although I have to admit that in some areas there was a lot of army/police control and of course there is some danger, but talk to locals and you know where to go and where not (isn't that true evrywhere?)

colombia is great...friendly people, great nights out, beautiful beaches...i dont think that many people go inland to see the mountains (which i am sure are amazing) because of the violent situation there. if you do want mountains and amazing scenery go to chile. let us know what you decide...
