I have known people who have stayed in Hostal Bellavista and Hostal Amazonas and said they were good. I haven't stayed there myself, though since I live here.

If you look for a private room (not an hostel), I can recommend Residencial Mery, or Res. Allemana, both on Republica (good location).

i only know about hostels, i know nothing about more upscale establishments:

party hostels (good for singles): la casa roja (barrio brasil), hostel de sammy (centro)
quiet and clean: ecohostel (centro)
in a lively fun area: hostel bellavista (bellavista)

I stayed in Happy House Jan 2006. It was very nice, but relatively expensive for a hostel. I think it was about $23usd just for the dorm. But there weren't many people staying there because of the highish price. Still it was the best hostel I have ever stayed in quality wise.

I stayed at Hotel Plaza Londres in Barrio Paris Londres on Londres 77, arrived at the hotel in late June without prior booking. Their shared facilities room is about 15,000$ - you get a whole room to yourself with clean shared shower/toilet.

There are other cheap accommodation in the next block also.

Hey, I stayed at Residencial Londres about 6 times now and love the place. Unsure on why they don't answer their email. The girl Gloria Miranda is usually very good. You can alway call ahead too, they get busy. If you rock up and they are full, there are three other places to stay directly across the street in the same price range. I pay U$13 for a single room, I think this is unbeatable value for such a coll old colonial building.
