We are planning to rent a car in November from Punta Arenas to drive to Puerto Natales and TdeP park. We would then like to drive to El Calafate and possibly El Chaltern, returning the car to Punta Arenas. Do car rental companies allow taking the car into Argentina and, if so, do they charge extra?

Also we plan to rent a car in the Lake District and do one way Temuco to Puerto Montt. Any ideas on which company to minimise one way charge and best places to stay for about 7-8 days in Lake District?

We rented a car in Punta Arenas in November 2014 and drove it to Ushuaya in Argentina. You need to get extra paperwork from rental company for the car to be able to cross the border. They were aware of it and did it no problem but it took extra day and cost somewhere in the vicinity of $70 if I'm not mistaken. With these papers we had no problem crossing to Argentina and returning back to Chile. Just show it on the border on both sides and officials would put a couple of stamps in it. Took few minutes.

It's a matter of having the rental car company buying you the Argentina car insurance for the time you estimate you will be there. Yes it will cost you extra, doesn't everything. We have taken a rental from Chile into Argentine twice both times for a month. Also consider a small SUV or double cab pick-up truck if you want to go off road. It's the ground clearance. Last time we rented a Toyota Hilux, double cab, turbo diesel, cheaper fuel and a lot of power. Rented from Budget, they know what to do. You might want to buses it from the Lake District to Puerto Montt unless you want to pay a large drop off charge, but you can ask them how much.
