Hi All
Has anybody experience in purchasing a simple car or motorbike in above mentioned countrys. Is it possible as a tourist ? And easy to insure like in other parts of the world. And can it easily be taken to the other latin American countries ?
I would love to travel on independent wheels for 6 month or longer and then just sell or scrapp it. Went that way in Australia and North America and find it hard going back to backpacking.
Any advice greatly appreciated.
Thx Carsten

Hi Carsten,
I am here in Quito and my friend has a Harley Davidson Sporster 883 for sale. He needs to put some new gaskets and do a couple of other things to it, but if you're interested, you can contact me off list at reinhard.corinne@gmail.com
I know Ecuador is a long ways from Argentina, Chile or Brazil, but maybe you're interested. Also you could try looking on craigslist for those countries for motorcyles and cars....

I travel by bicycle myself.

It is not easy or a tourist to buy a motor vehicle in either Chile of Argentina. To buy one you must have local tax ID which in Chile is possible but lengthy. I do not know about Brazil.

I agree re Argentina but in Chile it is actually quite simple.

The tax card no can be had in an afternoon and one can buy a vehicle if you know your number. Admittedly the paperwork for the card and the vehicle registration won't catch up for a week or two but that is only a complication if you want to leave the country during this time, which is still possible, just a lot more complicated.

You can only sell legally in the country of purchase.
