We will be crossing the border from Bolivia into San Pedro de Atacama Chile and have about 5 days to explore the area, until our flight from Calama to Santiago on Dec 15th. Would love any recommendations of what we could realistically do in 5 days, and return back to Calama... beach, or mountains? Or is 5 days not enough to venture out.
There is a excellent tour to Tatio geisers, it leaves SPA very early in the morning, full day. Another day take a tour to Toconao village and Miscanti salt lake. Third day see SPA surroundings and Moon valley (or in the first day depending on what time you arrive). You can then go to Iquique or Tocopilla, and return to Calama. One tour to do from Calama is to Chuquicamata copper mine, the biggest open pit copper mine in the world.

Would agree with jaloisio.
The Valle de la Luna is an abolsute must see to, esp at sunset. One of the most gorgeous places in the world.
If it helps, see http://www.idrn.org/llama.php for my pics from the atacama and surrounding areas, including el tatio and the copper mine at Chuquicamata
Hope helpful
Mike
