Hi everyone, im new to this forum and I think I have checked previous posts and can't see anything similar to what I am asking.

Basically, im going to be in Rio for 3 weeks this summer on my own for the world cup and I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for hostels in the Copacabana / Ipanema areas, which are good for meeting other single travellers and are good for partying.

many thanks in advance

If you haven't already booked your accommodation then the more pertinent question will be 'which hostels in those neighbourhoods actually have any vacancies?' You have left things rather late.

If your going for the WC. Chances are that most hostels are fully booked. You may get lucky with cancellations though.

Yes.

If there are any places left, they will be in the least popular hostels (and the price will be ridiculous).

I know someone who has just booked a dorm bed at El Misti in Copacabana..you could try that.I think it was about 85 euros a night......for 14th-21st June.

El Misti still has some spaces, so does the Copacabana hostel. If the world cup wasn't on are there any that you would recommend? many thanks.

Oh, I dunno. Just last week there was someone on here touting a chalet for folk to share in a camping in f&#ing Santa Cruz. Asking price was only $500 per person per week or about three times the monthly rental my mother in-law pays for an actual house in Campo Grande. It seems that the world is still your oyster if you haven't booked. ;-)

Still, I think the prize goes to the poster on another forum, who was transplanting themselves and their nearest and dearest to Marechal Hermes for the duration. I suspect that will prove an interesting sojourn. Certainly different to the picture postcard image they have of Rio.

If you’re assaulted at the World Cup, ‘don’t scream’ say Brazil police

Brazilian police have warned World Cup visitors not to scream if they are robbed. This comes among other tidbits of cautionary advice issued to intrepid sports fans visiting the country from June this year, in a pamphlet issued by Sao Paulo police.

“Do not react, scream or argue,” the brochure states. The Sao Paulo police, who put the document together, are reportedly attempting to keep criminal and violent incidents to a minimum.

The main warning is to help reduce harm caused by armed robbery - robbery followed by death, known as latrocinios – committed against those who have no idea how to behave in a city as violent as Sao Paulo, according to the local paper, Estadao Sao Paulo.

The crime of ‘latrocinios’ has become an increasingly widespread concern. “Tourists come mainly from Europe and the United States, where they do not see this crime very often,” President of the World Civil Police of Sao Paulo’s Cup Management Committee, Mario Leite, told the paper.

Pamphlets will be published in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese. “They will know that they should not walk showing off specific items, exercise caution walking alone at night, and be accompanied,” stated Leite.

He advised, at the risk of sounding paranoid, to always try and treat the journey as if someone was following or watching them.

“There is no use crying over spilt milk,” he stated, explaining it is necessary to be pragmatic in regards to the realities on the ground.

At least 600,000 foreign travelers are expected during the World Cup in Brazil, from June 12 to July 13.
Brazil itself has one of the globe’s highest murder rates. The UN Office on Drugs and Crime stated in 2012 that some 25 people are killed for every 100,000 of the population.

Other measures being taken include language training for police, as well as the establishment of a ‘talent bank’ to be filled with fluent foreign language experts, and the securing of paths from hotels to stadiums.

Part two.
Brasil is not London, different rules apply here.
In Rio/Ipanema boutique hotels have to pay gangs not to rob the tourists staying at the hotel from between 8am to 8pm......Hope you naive tourists get the picture?
