My partner and I are going to Morro in late September and hear that the Anima hotel and Villa dos Corais are the best places to stay. Which is better? We want to be able to go to the second beach for fun sometimes but are seduced by the Anima's claim to seclusion.
Any educated thoughts out there? :)

My vote goes to Villa dos Corais great location, very friendly staff, all in all excellent value.

Thanks! How are gay men treated in Brazil and what might we expect while in Morro? I'm American and its more tolerated than ever before but I have no clue about this area of Brazil to where I will be traveling.

Morro de São Paulo is an odd place, their beaches are conveniently titled First Beach, Second Beach, Third Beach and (surprise!) Fourth Beach. When you alight from the boat, you'll be greeted by a bunch of porters with wheel barrels. They'll know where you can find a place, I'd personally suggest 2nd Beach myself. They will walk you to a number of different pousadas, and if it doesn't meet your liking, they'll keep on trucking. If you want to do it yourself, that won't be a problem either, every place has a sign. If you do use the porter, 10 reais for 3 bags is not a bad price.
You have the usual machismo in Brazil that is endemic to all Latin American countries, but you won't have any problems. I currently live in Ipanema, three blocks from Posto 8, and is the equivalent to the Castro down here. If you make it to Rio, there's a guidebook called Rio For Partyers that has info on the gay scene.
