That article whose link was in post #2, I had to laugh at his list least welcoming destinations which includes Kuala Lumpur in the same article as Iraq. Well if it keeps the gullible away from KL, all the better. The idiot of a columnist has no idea what he's writing about. But don't bother to give this website more clicks.

You're not the only one who's spent time in Mexico. Just though you might like to know.

Oh thanks Luz. I would not have figured it out by myself. But it is really good to see that there are smart and very intelligent users here....: like you..................

Quoth Nestor: "Carlos you would better invest your time in trying to fly airplanes in Brasil.... "
Yes probably an easier project than invading the Falklands.
no llores por mi Argentina.....................

São Paulo and Rio have been more dangerous cities in Brazil.....but I feel more secure walking around São Paulo even in downtown...moreover, the prospect of being ripped off by Rio policemen is lower....

I came back yesterday from a 9 day long trip to SP...
I must admit i was shocked... Everyone here in Bs As seems to think that walking in the streets of SP is as dangerous as asking change for a 100 dollar banknote in Villa 31...
I felt safe, the city is beautiful, the locals are friendly, the city is clean (i expected it to be dirty)...
Great restaurants, amazing shops and a wild nightlife... I will definitely be back soon
Alittle word of advice tho, don't take cabs in SP, they are safe but they are seriously expensive... I payed 55 Reais for a lame taxi ride from where i was staying in Morumbi to the market in Liberdade...

Are you crazy? Rome? Barcelona? Get a grip! Rome, I live here. Not Dangerous. Barcelona, meek, you might get harassed by dudes trying to sell you beer on the street. And Sao Paulo, I stayed there 2 weeks on my own, and I even made friends. If you worry about stuff like that you should stay home.

I don't know what the most dangerous city in the world is but I do know that it is not in Brazil. I have been to many many countries and I felt safe in Brazil compared to some other places in Africa and Asia and even a few in South America. Yes, the major cities in Brazil such as Rio and Sao Paulo have their bad neighborhoods- the "favelas", but stay away from them and don't deal with drug dealers (which might seem obvious but you never know). Some of the street kids might mug you if they notice your foreign but they don't want to hurt you, they just need some money for food, so don't carry your passport or valuables and just give them 20 dollars and your fine (but I lived there for a while and I was never mugged neither were the 5 roommates I lived with who were also foreigners). Now, if you don't act stupid and decide to go out alone in the city without asking the Brazilians that work in the hotels where you should go and which places to avoid you'll be fine. I lived in Brazil with some friends for 6 months and I had the best time. I lived in Rio, in a neighborhood called Leblon and its right across from the beach and an amazing place I felt very safe. Now try saying that about any section in Baghdad... there is no comparing Sao Paulo with any war torn countries because heres the thing: walking in Sao Paulo in a safe neighborhood you have a one in a million chance of getting shot, while in a bad neighborhood thats probably slightly higher (given you don't provoke anyone) but those chances are standard for most places...now in Baghdad car bombs are going off all over the place--how can you say thats safer that Sao Paulo? Plus the average person in Brazil is super friendly and they are not anti-American in any way which is the total opposite of any Middle Eastern country. Again, I've never been mugged in Brazil not in the time I lived there nor in the three times I've visited (and I've been all over the place including Rio, Sao Paulo, Bahia, and Curitiba) but I was mugged once in Johannesburg, once in Venezuela, once in Mexico City, and once in LA...and in LA was the only time that I've ever had a gun put up to my head (but it was in the 80s and I still live in LA and its perfectly safe).
I'm returning to Brazil in august and I plan to stay a month both in Rio and Bahia....its an amazing place and while definitely dangerous it is not as bad as you are all making it out to be...you'll be fine there but please be smart. Oh, and ride taxis not buses.
But in comparison to Barcelona and Rome- definitely a shock.
I just realized that you're probably back from Brazil-- how was it?
