Cant wait to get to Brasil in 2 months! flying into Sao Paulo. Is this the most dangerous city in the world? How would it compare to somewhere like Barcelona...I could see potential danger there but not much at all really...also Rome. I have been to Asia, UK and Europe, also Egypt. Is Sao Paulo going to be a shock? Im not worried, im excited!

yes - it is the most dangerous in the world; far more so than Baghdad, Basra, Kandahar, Port Harcourt................

A good example of the farcical stuff on the Internet that purports to be information! Think it might just come as news to the vast majority of tourists who've visited Brazil without incident that the country is more dangerous than Iraq.

I'm not quite certain what the intent of this post is. Are you actively seeking out danger? In which case there are a goodly number of places I can reccomend within Brazil. I doubt you will be particularly troubled most murders and serious crime take place in parts you are unlikely to visit.
As for SP. Well statiscally it has lower homicide rates per capita (or at least it did last time I looked at the statsitics) than a number of large cities here. Belo Horizonte, Recife and Vitoria and one or two others all have higher per capita serious crime rates from memory.
Poster # 2 's link is the most facile crap I have seen in years. More dangerous than Iraq? Give me a break. Utterly farcical.
Relax, enjoy.

Shows how hyperbole can drown out reason. Yes, Brazil has a lot of dangerous places. I would probably say that SP is more dangerous than Barcelona, but depends where you go and when (SP is a huge, spread-out city). The fact that someone goes to a country for a week and nothing happens is simply anecdotal. Some value, but not much. I spent two days in Lagos and nothing happened, but I would still not say Lagos is safe (probably more dangerous than SP). Asking whether SP is the most dangerous city in the world is just plain silly. If someone says it is not, does that say it is safe? Of course not. If you talk with Brazilians you will get many stories of assults, kidnappings, etc. But you can still spend a vacation there without incident, especially sticking to safer areas and using common sense. No guarantees, but odds are with you. Right now, the problem in Brazil is the air travel crisis. Congonhas Airport has been shut and government has prohibited sale of tickets leaving from there until the situation is resolved. Gol Airlines has advised people to avoid flying if possible at least until July 30.
Sao Paulo is not a dangerous city. There might be some parts which should be avoided but there are a lot of parts which are not dangerous at all

I completely agree with most of what has been said on this post. I only posted the link cause I did a quick search after the post and found that. It is good to know where this sort of information is coming from and when rumours start spreading. Statistics can be manipulated in so many ways. Almost every city has its dangerous areas and not so dangerous areas. But there is no way that Iraq is not more dangerous for the average person and average place. Correct me if I am wrong, but a lot of the reason for the danger in Brazil is gang related, which is almost irrelevant to the typical traveler. Anyway, i am going to Sao Paolo by myself and I sure wouldn't do the same in Iraq regardless of what some statistician concludes.
