What are the best options for teaching english in Rio de Janeiro...? I am interested in hearing about legal ways (with a work visa) and under the table (without a work visa). Are there any particular schools or agencies i should make inquiries to...? Thanks.

I think the best way is u get papers.Otherwice the police federal hate GRINGOS!!!! They send u back, other wice you gonna stay keeper in a good place for 6 years.
Watch you ass!!!

Well, if you have university degree in english, I think you could make a contract with a private school, or a public, but private is what pays. You can also work in Brazil illegally, just be discreet, but really, as long as you behave nicely I don´t think it´s dangerous as such. If push comes to shove they might ask you to leave, it´s not a big crime. Names to check online would be www.culturainglesa.com. (br) www.skill.com (br) There are many private schools in Rio. If you manage to find some private students the going rate per hour would be maybe 25 reais per hour or more depending on you, your clients and your qualifications. Enjoy

"PMXN" - Don't waste my time with your stupid comments.
"EsbenK" - Thanks for your response! I'll check out those links you posted.

I am interested in this as well, especially legally. I am working on my masters in applied linguistics. This must make it easier to get papers. Is that a terribly difficult thing for an American to do? I am also interested to hear of others teaching experiences..not just in Rio but in other places around Brazil.
