Is there much to see on the bus between Salvador and Rio? I want to fly (as it will be the last days in our trip) but my travel buddy wants to bus it for the scenery/price.
Cheap flights are running out fast (26 Dec). Is the bus a similar price to a one- way plane ticket? Does it take 24hrs, and are there any nice spots to stop off on the way to chill and relax before heading back to Rio and home?
Your advice is appreciated.

well, i have been on the bus from belo horizonte to salvador. it took 24 hours... about R$150.it was a tough trip. however, i did experience the road trip style of brazil. the snack and toilet stops were some experience. there are some nice moutains along ways. but as you may know, roads in brazil are dangerous due to the low quality of construction of roads( the greedy politicians).
then i flew from salvador to sao paulo, mid night flight, cheap, cost about R$250. pretty close to the bus ride. and took a bus from sao paulo to Rio, via Paraty, along the coast line, that was absolutly amazing view!!!! it took longer that just straight high way from SP-Rio, becoz it follows the coast line. but Gosh, that was so beautiful.
from salvador to rio, i would say, it may take about 36 hours.
plane ticket is similar to bus ticket, from my experience.
but you never know, it is brazil. the airport may close, the road may break down, the bus may break down, the one sitting behind you may want to steal your camera... but anything you decide would be a great experience, as long as you are well prepared.
good luck and have fun!
