Without risking life and limb hitching to Belem, swimming the amazon and possibly dying on the clandestine flight to Bogota with Aerosucre, are there any cost cutting alternatives you can recommend to our itininerary? I was hoping that travelling as a couple would be a bit cheaper eg accomodation, but it hasnt been the case at all, so getting to
Salvador - Belem R$249 (Bus)
Belem - Manaus R$250? (boat)
Manaus - Leticia R$200 (boat)
Let - Bogota $346COP

These are the cheapest prices in general i can find from here in Salvador, can anyone suggest cheaper companies to go with on the Amazon or anyother fabulous ideas.

cheers todos

Hi there,

Couldn't you get a direct flight from Salvador to Manaus or maybe even the area of Leticia?
How long will this route you mention here take from start to finish?

Air passes used to be good value
Does Gol have any offers?

Hey.. I just flew from Salvador to Manaus a couple of weeks ago and I went with GOL.. Yeah, the flight was pricey: about $625USD...It depends how much time and aggravation you want to spend getting to Manaus overland. I considered the bus to Belem, and the boat from Belem to Manaus.. but after realizing it would take about two weeks to do this route, and all the money for food, hotels while waiting for appropriate buses and boats, and how little sleep I would be getting( sleeping on buses and in hammock- you have to buy a hammock- on the boat with as little space and as much noise as you can imagine.)I decided on the pricy two hour flight. On the other hand, the overland route is kind of an adventure itself. After all is said and done , though.. it may turn out to be just a bit cheaper of an option then flying.
hope this helps..
peace

i heard all the jungle lodge tours in manaus are 150reals per day. i had an awesome experience doing kayaking with amazon mystery tours, but they are not budget. you can try getting in touch directly with one of the guides i had and he may be able to do something more affordable. his name is rinaldo and his email is alvesborboleta@yahoo.com.br

he speaks fluent english and was an amazing guide. i felt very safe and comfortable throughout the trip!

Thanks heaps for your ANSWERS. Sorry, i get sick of people answering queries with more queries of their own...sorry :(

sincerely thanks for responses though. flying is by far the quickest but most expensive way to get to Manaus from Salvador...bugger. There are various permutations for overland/plane combined trips but really, the one bus seems to be the winner so far.

cheers all x
