Hi!

I'm struggling trying to find an area in Rio de Janeiro to book my accommodation in. I'm looking for something clean and not too expensive in a safe area. Nothing fancy, a decent hostel would do. I just don't want to worry about walking alone in the streets at all time!

Do you have any recommendations as to the safest area to stay? Or hotels in particular?

Thanks in advance!

All much of a muchness, safety wise within Zona Sul, which is where the vast bulk of hotels and other forms of tourist accommodation are to be found. Catete and Flamengo typically have the cheapest hotels but some function as 'motels' and you also need to weigh up the cost vs amenity and convenience of a locale. If you want to spend most of your time on the beach you are better off looking at Copacabana and Ipanema.

As Corisco says, its all a much of a muchness. You will find a better bang for buck in Botafogo/Catete/Flamengo. Certainly, you'll pay for more Ipanema and Copacabana.

I look at it with how close I want to be to the beach - and generally try to stay as close to that as I can afford - somewhere in Ipanema. If you want to be close to the sights then Catete/Flamengo will be best.

TBH, there isn't much difference between prices - probably 5-10 dollars.

We liked Botafogo. Nice residential neighborhood. We stayed at the Ibis there. Short metro ride to the beach.
