A friend of mine is travelling to Sao Paulo and Im planning on flying to Rio to meet her. We would only have a week together so I'd rather not spend too much time in buses. What places would you recommend to visit in between these two cities? I dont really want to be in SP (dislike big cities) and Rio is probably too far away (is it?) for her to take a bus by herself. Thanks

go to isla grande! it´s amazing and in between the 2 cities. i went there and had a blast. you can take a bus to angre dos rios and from there a boat to isla grande.enjoy!

All great suggestions. None will save you any time or hassle in getting there from SP or Rio, versus one of you going all the way from one of the cities to the other (they are sort of between Rio and SP, but far from the main route between the two), but both would be more pleasant in atmosphere. No place I can think of mid-way on the main route between SP and Rio.
Suggest you consider meeting your friend in Paraty, a great colonial town on the coast about half-way between Sao P and Rio. For details and photos see the "Southeastern Brazil" section of our travel journal: www.evcal.org</a>
