Hi there,
i am going to Rio for 10 days in august this year. I am a single, female traveller from Germany (hopefully, Germans are still welcome to Brazil after the world cup semifinal...). My flight arrives at 09.00 pm at the international airport. I guess, it takes some time to manage immigration, baggage and customs. What is my safest option for the transfer to my hotel in Copacabana ? Is it safe to take a taxi from outside the terminal or is it better to make a booking for a pre-paid taxi inside the terminal building ? I definitely do not want to take a bus. Does anyone know a reliable shuttle service, which operates at that time of the day and can be booked online in advance ?
I plan to do a lot of sightseeing: Sugar loaf, Christo Redentor, Tijuca, Botanical garden, Centro, a Favela tour (Santa Marta), Santa Teresa and of course i like to test the beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana. I am totally aware, that i could do all this on my own using public transport . But: I am worried about the safety issues, so i prefer to do most of the sightseeing organized and guided. Of course, i found grayline, as a major tour operator, but are there any other good options in Rio ? Does in Rio operate for example a hop-on-hop-off-bus ? Or is it possible to rent a personal car + driver/guide, who drives/shows me around ? Any reliable agency known, that can provide such a service ?
My hotel will be the Windsor Excelsior on Avenida Atlantica in Copacabana.
How to get money ? Germany´s foreign ministry informs on its website, that the atm´s at GIG airport are reported to be unsafe due to scams. I don´t like to bring much cash in Euros and travellers cheques seem to be out of fashion. So, where do i get money out of my plastic cards as safe as possible ?
Thanks in advance for any advice/ideas/suggestions ! Tschüss from Germany, Sabine
