Wrong forum for this? If so, kindly repost to somewhere more appropriate.

I hope to use the return portion of my Sao Paulo-Berlin-Sao Paulo air ticket to return to Brasil but for health reasons might not be able to. So I thought "Oh well, if I can't I can't. No big deal. Accept it. Just don't turn up." Then I found out that the airline can charge me more, on top of what I've already paid, because I don't show up!

*“It’s an issue for us,” says Marianne Lindsey, a spokeswoman for the airline. “When we experience no-shows, it results in unused seats, which translates to lost revenue.”
*
Yerah, an unused seat, but they've already had from me my money for it. What the hell is going on? Does greed and avarice know NO bounds? Is there no longer in business the concept of a difference between right and wrong (according to my perceptions of these concepts)?

As a teacher, I used to give some private classes. If a student didn't show, I invariably rescheduled. I could have said "You didn't come but you must pay". If I'd been an airline, I'd have said "you didn't come but you must pay AND you must pay me more on top of that".

Yeah, the world has moved on. I am so sad to see that stuff like this is happening.

Well, some airlines will cancel your air ticket entirely with no refund if you do a no show. If you can't make it for the flight, call the airline and pay the fee to change your travel date. There's no way around it.

I've never heard of this, and often used return tickets instead of 1-way, because they are cheaper. I don't think you have to worry.

@mstep I think the OP is only talking about not using the return flight on his/her ticket. The entire ticket being canceled without a refund would not be an issue in this case.

Yeah, I used the first part of the return ticket.

Never heard of that either, and I share your feelings about the outrageous way the air company is treating you. They've already got the money you have paid, and on top of that they should actually be happy that it is one empty seat they can try to sell. And even if they can't sell it, that at least translates to more comfort for the other passengers.

May I ask you which air company it is? I'm going to Germany soon, and that's a company I should try to avoid.

My flight is with Turkish Airlines but I'm not sure yet of the charge to be made in my case, if I don't use the return portion.
